If you specify any of the contesting game types that support several teams in a server's configuration (Game type) you can use the Team options dialog window to refine the team settings. Both, game type and level (mission), need to support several teams in order for this to work. CTF or Monsterball are such game types.
Allow team change gives players the option to change between teams during the game. Auto balance teams ensures that the team sizes stay as equal as possible. Enable team damage (also called friendly fire) switches the game into a mode where members of the same team can damage each other. This is off by default, resulting in when players that belong to the same team shoot at each other no damage is caused. If friendly fire (Enable team damage) is on, it's going to hurt when your buddy hits you accidentally or on purpose. Set alternate teamname #1 lets you enter a name for team number 1. Set alternate teamname #2 etc lets you specify a name for the respective team number. Descent 3 supports up to four teams. Entry fields for team names are of course only enabled when this amount of teams has been set in the server's configuration dialog.
