Upon playing some more Descent 2 it has become apparent to me that robot sounds are not the only sounds that need replacing. We also have all those D1-exclusive door sounds and projectile firing sounds, some of which have been changed in Descent 2. I know it's possible to replace the shooting sounds, but what about the door sounds?

I haven't played D1 in ages.
Does it support background/room sounds like Descent 3?
If it does, I may have some unused samples for your project.

I don't think so, Thomas. In Descent 1 and 2 sounds have to come from somewhere, be it robots or textures. In Descent 2 the illusion of background sounds is stronger, as flowing lava and water emit these sounds.

Does that mean that you could have custom sounds from textures?

Well, I dunno. If you place a rotating fan texture, it makes a rotation sound. You probably could replace it, though.

If you could swap a texture, like say a fan, with another sound, you could easily place a "closed" wall with no trigger with fan textures behind it. The fans would open "into the void" as it were, but there'd be no way to tell they were there. And because the sounds can travel through the wall, you'd still get the custom noise. Alternatively, just edit the fan texture itself to something else. (Option B is probably much simpler.

Only D2X-XL does.

We won't be able to fix the door sounds unfortunately... the sound changes have to be global, plus D2 doesn't have as many door sounds to replace (and door sounds are texture specific, so there's no way to get a door to, say, use a multiplayer specific sound).
Same goes with the weapons, though I didn't think D2 replaced any of the weapon sounds... just increased the resolution/quality.
