Free Software - Tips and tricks

"Mozilla Firefox is an award-winning web browser offering a much superior web browsing experience with benefits such as faster browsing, real privacy and security, and smarter searching."

These are facts we all know. Even Firefox's download functionality is much more sophisticated than the one of other web browsers like Internet Explorer & Co.

If it only was configured properly by default.

Without changes, Firefox loves to drop all downloaded files either on the Windows desktop or in a folder called "Downloads", depending on its version - without any kind of user interaction or confirmation. If a file is downloaded a second time, the software simply adds "(2)" to the file name. This continues, and the numbers increase. Firefox's default behaviour when storing downloaded files can be very annoying, in particular when the downloaded files belong to a set of files whose names should not be changed.

Since Firefox is a highly configurable browser, we don't need to live with this flaw. To make the download function of Firefox work properly, its behaviour can be changed.

Go to "Tools", then "Options".

The "Main" settings page is the one on the far left of the settings notebook (Options).

Tick "Always ask me where to save files" to receive a dialog window that asks you where to save a downloaded file.

From now on Firefox will nicely ask where the precious downloads should go, and you will always be in control of what the files should be named on your hard drive before pressing the 'Ok' button.

Happy downloading with Firefox!
