Descent 3 - Descent 3 files section

This is a modified version of "Descent 3.exe". I used a binary file editor (the HexEdit plugin for Notepad ++) and ResHacker to modify the executable module. Pete finally showed mercy with my ugly buttons and created nicer images for them.

Changes to the original version:

  • The "Visit us!" button diverts over one of my domains to Interplay's homepage. The reason why I couldn't let it point to directly is because the domain name is too long to fit in the original binary file's text "". This hack avoids the advertisement pages someone has put behind Outrage's old homepage and leads people to the page they are supposed to see when they want to visit the homepage of the (current) Descent 3 owners: Interplay's page.
  • The "Auto-Update" button now points to one of my domains which is up and running and provides the directory structure for the updater. This means that it reports the update status correctly. In the original "Descent 3.exe", this button lets you wait for minutes without doing anything. Thanks to D.Cent for finding out how to implement that.
  • The "Play online" button points to the home of Vortex instead of Parallax Online. This change gets rid of the "Page not found" error message, because PXO Online has shut down a long time ago already. Incidentally, Vortex is a good replacement for PXO. Maybe it would be good if that button pointed to a page with more general information about playing Descent 3 online, but I haven't been able to find a good replacement page yet. I think that the D3 tracker looks too plain to link to it with this button, although it would be a better choice in my opinion as it has more information on a web page and doesn't necessarily require installation like Vortex does.

As you can see in the screenshot at the bottom of that page, I'm not a designer. Pete has finally taken on the task of creating nicer buttons - and I believe they are very nice. Thanks, mate.

If you have any additional ideas or suggestions regarding to where they may point to on the net, let me know as well.

The zip file contains the modified version of the file "Descent 3.exe". I recommend making a backup of your original file first before you replace it with the one downloaded from here, because it has not been tested with different language versions of the game yet.

Just for reference, this is what I had before Pete provided his version of the buttons:
