Descent 3 - Descent 3 dedicated server tool for Windows

A right mouse click in the server list of D3Server3's main window opens a popup menu.

OpenServerLogFileSmall

If no server is selected, the menu only consists of a few items regarding D3Server3 itself (see screenshot on the right). If at least one server is selected, the menu consists of many more items to perform a wide range of actions on this and all other selected servers. (see screenshot below).

Online help (open browser window)

The popup menu item "Online help (open browser window)" opens a browser window with this webpage. It provides information on each of the menu entries and explains their functionalities. For a detailed description on how the opening and monitoring logfiles functions work, see the article Opening and monitoring logfiles.

Start server(s)

This popup menu item is identical to the main window's button with the same name ("Start server(s)"). It opens the server configurations selector dialog window that lets you select one or more server(s) to be started. The server configurations selector dialog window also provides options to create a new server, edit existing ones, import, copy, and delete them.

Stop server(s)OpenServerLogFile

"Stop server(s)" stops the selected servers, if more than one are selected, or the selected server, if only one is selected. Servers stopped with this function are stopped unconditionally. This means D3Server3 does not check if the server is currently being played. You need to ensure yourself that there are no players in the server(s) in question if you don't want to chuck them out. When a server with players is stopped the players are automatically disconnected.

Stop empty server(s)

The popup menu item "Stop empty server(s)" only stops servers that are currently not being played. This is the preferred method of stopping servers unless you really want to disconnect your playing pilots. The function does not stop servers that have players.

Copy d3://ip:port (localhost, 127.0.0.1)

Copies the D3 link with the localhost IP address to the Windows clipboard. This IP address is only useful for the computer on which D3Server3 and the dedicated servers run. If you're hosting a server on your gaming computer, this function can be quite helpful in joining the server with the Direct IP Launcher.

Copy d3://ip:port (private, x.x.x.x)

Copies the D3 link with the host computer's private IP address to the Windows clipboard. Private IP addresses are only visible from within the same private network. If you're hosting game servers on a LAN you can give this D3 link to your fellow pilots to join by for example using the Direct IP Launcher.

Copy d3://ip:port (public)

Copies the D3 link with the host computer's public IP address to the Windows clipboard. You can give this link to other players on the internet to join your game. This only works if the server's UDP port has been forwarded to the computer hosting the dedicated Descent 3 server(s).

Open/show server control panel(s)

Opens the server control panel for the selected server(s). The server control panel lets you issue server commands (console commands) to the server and watch its output.

Minimize server control panel(s)

Minimizes the server control panel(s) of the selected server(s) to the Windows taskbar. You can restore the control panel(s) again by selecting "Open/show server control panel(s)".

Hide server control panel(s)

Hides the server control panel(s) of the selected server(s). The control panel still stays open in the background but is not displayed on the screen anymore. You can display the panel(s) again with "Open/show server control panel(s)".

Close server control panel(s)

This function closes the server control panel(s) of the selected server(s). Note that there is a difference between hiding and closing a control panel. A control panel that has been closed is not updated in the background. However, hidden control panels are updated although they are not visible.

Show server window(s)

Restores the selected server window(s). By default, recent versions of D3Server3 start dedicated Descent 3 servers in a hidden state, meaning that their windows are not visible on the screen. This speeds up the time a server requires to start significantly. Use "Show server window(s)" to display a dedicated Descent 3 server's window on the screen.

Minimize server window(s)

Minimizes the selected server window(s) to the Windows taskbar. Since there is no obvious benefit over hiding a dedicated server's window entirely, the function "Hide server window(s)" should be favoured unless you prefer clicking in the taskbar to restore a server window again.

Hide server window(s)

This popup menu item hides the selected server window(s). Use this function to hide server windows you currently don't want to see on the screen. You can easily get the window back by selecting "Show server window(s)".

Open log folder

Opens an Explorer window of the folder that contains D3Server3's logfiles. This is the subdirectory "log" underneath the server tool's main directory. You can open the logfiles with your preferred application and copy, move, or delete them. Actually, you can do anything Windows Explorer provides but don't move or rename your log folder, because D3Server3 needs it to store logfiles.

Open main logfile

Opens the application Large Text File Viewer (LTF) to view D3Server3's main logfile. You can close the application yourself but D3Server3 closes it when D3Server3 is closed itself. Logfiles are automatically rotated, i.e. D3Server3 closes the viewer and re-opens it again when the logfile changes. See Opening and monitoring logfiles for more information on this functionality.

Open main logfile detached

Works like "Open main logfile" by opening the Large Text File Viewer (LTF) to view D3Server3's main logfile. Since LTF is started detached from D3Server3 it won't automatically close when the server tool exists and it won't roll-over to a new logfile either. See Opening and monitoring logfiles for more information on this functionality.

Open server logfile

Opens a dedicated Descent 3 server's logfile with the application Large Text File Viewer (LTF). D3Server3 rolls-over the logfile by first closing the LTF window and then re-opening it again with the new logfile. The window is also closed when the server tool exits. See Opening and monitoring logfiles for more details.

Open server logfile detached

Opens a dedicated Descent 3 server's logfile with LTF, the Large Text File Viewer and detaches it from the server tool. The logfile neither rolls-over nor does D3Server3 close the viewer window when it exits. Have a look at Opening and monitoring logfiles to find out more.

Monitor main logfile with Tail

Opens a new window with tail.exe, the tool to monitor logfiles. The window can be closed manually but closes automatically when D3Server3 is closed. The server tool frequently checks if the logfile name has changed. If it has changed, D3Server3 closes the window with the previous logfile and opens a new one with the new logfile. Therefore, this function can be used to monitor D3Server3's main logfile over a long period of time. See Opening and monitoring logfiles for more details.

Monitor main logfile with Tail detached

Opens a new window with tail.exe, the tool to monitor logfiles. When D3Server3 creates a new logfile for a new week or day, the window is not updated. The window stays open when D3Server3 is closed. This is because tail.exe is started entirely detached from D3Server3. See Opening and monitoring logfiles for more information.

Monitor server logfile(s) with Tail

This function lets you monitor a dedicated Descent 3 server's logfile over a long period of time. The window can be closed manually but closes automatically when D3Server3 is closed. The server tool frequently checks if the logfile name has changed. If it has changed, D3Server3 closes the window with the previous logfile and opens a new one with the new logfile. Opening and monitoring logfiles explains this in more detail.

Monitor server logfile(s) with Tail detached

Opens a new window with tail.exe. The tool tail.exe is used to monitor logfiles. The window is entirely detached from the server tool. It is not closed when D3Server3 is closed, and it also does not follow a logfile roll-over from one day to the next or from one week to a new one. See Opening and monitoring logfiles on how this works exactly.
