Building a terrain and an exit.

Here is the default terrain. You can see it in level view, from far above :

Terrain is flat and y = 0. Terrain file is a pcx file, 256 x 256 pixels, black and white (levels of grey).

With the picture below, white color will make hills (y = 300), black will make the ground (y = 0). Better blur the picture to make smooth hills, the ones in the picture will be too acute :

Save your pcx file and import it with the terrain bar :

There will be a central valley, surrounded with (acute) hills. You wont be able to go on the other side over the hills. But it is better, there is only the blue nowhere outside of the terrain.

Let's have a look to the terrain texture :

Argh! What you see now is a random generated texturing. This needs to be reworked. You can choose other terrain textures with the texture bar, select cells with the terrain bar, and apply those textures to your terrain. Use the "key" button for how to select / deselect a terrain cell, rotate the texture, and more. There are at least 32x32 big cells on the terrain. Each big cell is 200x200 units.

As the terrain bar is open and ready, right click on the level window, show sky dome and move camera to satellites. Here are the default satellite and the default sky :

Select textures for your satellite and your sky and apply them with the terrain bar. If you choose a satellite without light, it will be night outside. Here are 2 satellites and a milky way sky :

Back to the surface. Your exit tunnel reaches the surface and goes over the terrain, but it seems a hole in the terrain is needed :

View from above your exit tunnel, select one terrain cell :

Toggle Vis. This will cut the big selected terrain cell into little pieces and make a hole in the left down corner of the big cell. It is not the right place! Dont deselect for now :

Select a little terrain cell at the right place :

Toggle Vis. The place of the hole will change. It is the right place, you may deselect now :

This makes a convenient hole in the terrain for your exit tunnel :

But now, there are holes all around :

The internal room is ready for the exit. One face is textured with palmleaf. In world view, select this face and link your internal room to a new external room. You will see just nothing, the palmleaf face will be replaced by a portal :

With the "R" key in room view, open the newly created external room. It is a "one face only" room. Add faces to build your external exit room :

Your exit on the terrain is ready.

Hi Fox, this reminds me of me trying to figure out how to move things in D3Edit.

Sorry.
The "key" button is the green button in the toolbar that displays keys shortcuts.
Those shortcuts are very usefull to let us know how to select, rotate, ... terrain cells.
And very usefull too for moving objects you inserted on the terrain, because it is not the same as moving objects you inserted inside the mine.
I will try to ask the fly anyway ...

Another easy to follow tutorial for this beginner which I have now managed to complete.

The only problem I had was realising that when Mzero said use the key to select terrain cells it meant that I had to use the Alt+lefthand mouse click to select.

It must have been quite amusing to be a fly on the wall watching me trying to select terrain cells by using the Select Cells function and trying to work out their appropriate number.

Still that's what end users are for and if we don't admit our mistakes chances are that we are not going to learn very much.
