If you can't hear any sound in the game from the room next to the one you're currently in then this could be because of the portal texture. By default, D3Edit sets portal textures to Palmleaf1.
This texture seems to let sound through, but obviously not many other textures. When playing Descent 3 all portal textures are invisible unless they have been turned on explicitely via script ("Enable forcefield"). That means the player won't notice if a different portal texture has been set for a particular portal between rooms. If you can't hear sound from one room in another then it could be that the portal texture is not Palmleaf1. Make sure you check this first. One thing you shouldn't do at all is to use the "Fix Portal Sounds" function, even if available.
