Descent 3 - Playing Descent 3 online

As opposed to in-game servers dedicated servers (so called dedis) provide a remote console.

The remote console needs to be turned on when the server is started, and you also need to specify a password. When this is set up it is possible to connect to the server via telnet. Since Descent's default remote console port is not the default telnet port 23 make sure you provide a port number when connecting.

How to set up a dedi (dedicated server) and all its commands are explained in Descent 3's manual from page 57 onwards.

With the server tool it's only a few mouse clicks to configure a server to allow remote telnet access.

Connection example:

If your server has its remote console enabled on port 2092, which is the default, open a command line window on that machine and use telnet to connect to it.

Windows command line window with telnet

On Windows 2000/XP, you would click on "Start", then "Run", type in "cmd.exe" plus the enter key. Do not enter the double quotation marks. A command line window shows up, and you can enter "telnet localhost 2092" plus again the enter key. Then you can type something like "say hello" to greet your players (no double quotation marks). You can find all supported commands in the manual from page 57 (see above).

While in game, (and, in that case, you need to use port numbers differents from 2092 for your server and for its console, or you wont be able to join your own dedicated server), you can use F8 to log on the remote console by typing "$remote login password", with your console admin password, and without the quotemarks. You can now use F8 to type your commands, with "$remote". Example: "$remote $warp 1"
