Descent 3 - Installation, updates, and modifications

You can run the GOG version of Descent 3 only once after installation. A second attempt won't bring up the game's launcher anymore. You wait a few minutes or restart the computer, and then you can start Descent 3 again.

Sometimes you can find a process called "Descent 3.exe" or "Main.exe" in the Windows task list (Task Manager), but there is no Descent 3 window in sight. Even if one of the processes exists and you kill it from the task manager you still cannot run Descent 3 again until you either wait a few minutes or restart the computer.

When you try to start Descent 3 the screen may or may not flicker for a quick moment  Also, the game's properties dialog may become slightly disrupted when it is open during the operation. For example, some entry field frames may disappear. Note the missing entry field 3D frames in the second image below around "Target", "Start in", "Shortcut key", and "Comment" compared to the first image.

GOG (Good Old Games) have created their own version of Descent 3's installation program. During the installation it's almost impossible not to see that you're installing the GOG version, and once installed you can recognize it by its unique game launcher which has the original version's broken image buttons removed:

Solution:

The GOG installer turns on the Windows Compatibility Mode for Windows 98/Windows ME for Descent 3. This is what causes the above issues.

The problem seems to be bound to some computer hardware. It occurred on two PCs with almost identical hardware, but did not show up on a third machine with different hardware. On the third PC the GOG version of Descent 3 ran right from the beginning without issues, even though the compatibility mode for Windows 98/Me was turned on. There is also no screen flickering on that third PC.

It is difficult to say what's finally exactly causing the problem, because the two machines where the software wouldn't work are from the same manufacturer with only different submodel numbers and both running Windows XP Professional. Tests with other software running on these PCs in the Windows 98/Me compatiblity mode show similar weird behaviours like a flickering screen and a long process lifetime after being closed. The only vaguely related information I could find on the web is an article at Sunday Software's site regarding Kid Pix XP Problems. At the bottom of this article they conclude that it may be down to a combination of Windows XP Professional and Intel Extreme graphics chips. Both PCs that wouldn't want to run the Good Old Game version of Descent 3 in Windows 98/Me compatibility mode do in fact have Intel Extreme graphics chips, and they both run Windows XP. The graphics drivers are up to date.

The only known solution currently is to turn the Windows Compatibility Mode for "Descent 3.exe" off.

To avoid the problem right from the beginning you can download and install the full version of Descent 3 from Dateiliste instead. Note that you still need to own a legal copy of your GOG version of Descent 3 even if you install our version.

The GOG ran perfectly before. It still does. Never had any issues with it.
Your version has a lot more icons. This is very good for sinple play. Never knew that there are so many. This'll keep me busy for some time.
