If you try to start a Descent 3: Mercenary game and receive the error message Unable to load level file merc1.d3l then Mercenary has not been installed properly. Descent 3 displays this error message when the Windows registry entries for the game are missing. This can happen when you copy the game folder from one computer to another one instead of installing Descent 3 with its installation program. The registry entry Descent 3 is looking for is the entry for Windows' Add/Remove Programs for Mercenary. To fix this, create the following registry key:
Then create a string value UninstallString there. You can leave it empty. At the same location, create another string value DisplayName and set it to Descent 3: Mercenary. You can also download the registry file MercenaryUninstallFix.reg and apply it to your registry. It creates the key including both values. Download MercenaryUninstallFix.reg (0.00 MiB = 0.6 KiB = 622 bytes) The game just checks for the existence of the UninstallString key/value pair but does not use it for anything else. The string value DisplayName is not required at all but Windows' Add/Remove Programs might play up if it finds uninstall entries without display names. Windows XP has no problem if DisplayName is missing, but I couldn't test it on all Windows versions.
