Descent 3 - Tips, tricks, and opinions

Every now and then I'm asked why I don't play anarchy games.

The short answer to this question is: I do play anarchy games, just not online.

Playing anarchy and its other derivatives online is in my opinion not as much fun as playing co-op games. I love to have two or more people in the same room, only a few meters distance between them, and beating the brain out of each other. The shouts, whingings, gestures, screams, and jumps through the room, and the beer during and afterwards make it a pleaseant experience. I even like to watch other people fighting when I take a quick break, mostly because of these happenings.

In my opinion, If you play online much of the fun goes away. Bad network connections ("lag") and the lack of visible personal contact with your opponents reduce the adventure significantly.

On the contrary, working your way through single-player missions doesn't give you this kick in the first place, hence you're not missing out on anything. When you play them online with others the differences are that you're not alone in the mines, need to be more careful, can read and write messages, somehow play in a team, and the mission finishes quicker most of the time.

I would not suggest playing a co-op game with several people in the same room. This is what anarchy games are made for.
