You can download D3Edit in different packages.

The favourite download is the installation program. It contains the Descent 3 SDK (software development kit) and the compiler required to compile scripts. It also provides the option to extract the sounds from the game so that you can listen to them inside D3Edit. In other words, all the complicated configuration steps required for scripting in previous versions are now obsolete.

In case you don't trust installation programs, here is the Inno Setup source code for the installer. It includes the compiler and the Descent 3 SDK. You'll need 7zip to extract the archive.

A plain zip file containing the editor's main executable file is also available. If you use this package you need to download compiler and SDK separately and configure everything yourself. Extract the exe file and place it in a folder on your system, then run it.

As a bare minimum you only need d3edit.exe. It goes without saying that you have to do all the configuration work yourself, if you go for this download option. Just copy the file in a folder on your system and give it a go. Script compiler and SDK need to be downloaded, installed, and set up manually.
