StartSP (Start single-player) is a piece of software that tries to fix Descent 3's bug with the "-mission" parameter. It is not a patch but rather a wrapper application that hides all mission files except the one declared with the command line switch -mission.

Descent 3's Readme file says that a mission file can be named and loaded automatically by using the command line option "-mission".

Excerpt from Readme.txt:

• Added the -mission command-line option. This causes the specified mission file to be loaded at program start, and makes that mission the default when starting a new game. Usage: -mission .

I have never installed any version of D3 with this command line switch working. Not even the two startmenu shortcuts "Descent 3 Retribution" (installed by the first two CDs) and "Descent 3 Mercenary" (installed by the Mercenary add-on pack) have ever loaded their mission files correctly and made them default for starting new games.

It is known that this bug has been fixed in the unofficial Descent 3 patch 1.5, but this patch introduces many other and new bugs. It is not recommended to use Descent 3 version 1.5, but unfortunately version 1.4 doesn't handle the -mission parameter at all due to this specific bug.

This is what StartSP tries to circumvent.
