Taking Descent 3 screenshots is pretty straight forward. It's just a matter of pressing the Print Scrn (Print Screen) button on the keyboard. The files are stored in Descent 3's main folder as "Screenshot[nnn].tga". The filename part [nnn] is in an incrementing number. It is incremented by 1 whenever the Print Scrn button is pressed.

This works independant of the game type (single-player or multi-player).

TGA files can be viewed and edited with almost any arbitrary image software.

Most of the time the pictures appear darker than they looked like in the game. This is due to Descent 3 adjusting the screen's brightness and contrast according to the video settings in the game. Those settings are not used/adjusted when the screenshot files are saved.

By default, Descent 3 shows some information required to play the game, for example the cockpit view, points, rear mirrors, etc.

To get rid of those additional areas and obtain plain pictures without any of this stuff displayed, most of it can be turned off.

There are several ways to get this example picture. One of them is to change the configuration file for your ship's cockpit view.

I'm going to show you the conventional method here that doesn't require messing around with config files.

To receive best results, the mission/level should be played in single-player. In multi-player the cheatcodes don't work, but you need one of them to stop the game counting points. This will make it easer to erase or paint over that part of the screen.

First, enter the mission you'd like to take screenshots off in single-player. If you can't find the mission in the game list, it's possible that the SP flag is missing. Put it in first, but don't forget to take it out later again if the level is not a real single-player mission (for example anarchy). D3Edit can assist you with those tasks.
